Harland Brewing Company was created in the image of its owners & by people that inspire others to live their lives doing what they love. Whether it’s building motorcycles in your garage to fly fishing a secret stream, Harland embodies the spirit of rolling up your sleeves to get the job done.
There’s two particular things that stick out to me when I first started working for Harland. The first thing is problem solving and the second is what differentiates you from other designers? I remember this because my boss asked me this in my interview. I simply responded that I am literally eating, sleeping and breathing design. I will always have fresh ideas for an upcoming project becuase I get inspired by everything around me. I see desgin in everything. Even if I tried not to it’s still there. I believe that we as humans digest some things subconciously. So I capture all of these moments and I keep them stored away for whatever upcoming task comes my way. It’s a gift and a curse but I am always thankful for it.
As for the former, designing at Harland and working day to day w/ custom type is problem solving in itself. I have designed can labels, social media posts, hero images, billboards, truck wraps, merchandise, packaging dielines, menus and every single one of these projects I approach as if I am solving a problem. Maybe there’s too much text that needs to fit in a specific space or maybe the photo you’re working w/ is too lo-res for your dimensions, or maybe you have to fit 24 dishes with descriptions on a letter sized menu. It’s all daily problem solving and the only way to become a better designer is through experience and for that I am appreciative for every waking second I have here working for Harland. Also, surround yourself with good design inspo. like books, posters, records and vintage gasoline cans that you’ll find in your neighbors garage becuase the answer to some of the daily problems you encounter is there somewhere, you just have to be willing to look!
